Profile
Set in the middle of an impossibly picturesque West Village block, a few doors down from the Washington Irving house, this small bakery is the place of children’s sugar-filled dreams. Owner Tina Casaceli has given the place a more modern makeover, with blue and brown walls replacing the kitschy bric-a-brac and groaningly cute cookie-related jokes. (“Why did the cookie go to the doctor? He was feeling crummy.") The menu bypasses massive layer cakes and tiramisu in favor of comforting American standards like brownies, sundaes, and ice-cream sandwiches, along with piles of well-priced premade cookies and milk shakes in which to dunk them. As a novel twist, cookies can also be baked to order on the spot, with customers choosing such ingredients as mint chips, blueberries ,and walnuts to spice up doughs in vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter, and oatmeal. Once you’ve sampled the delectably lethal graham-cracker, dark-chocolate, and toffee-chip magic bars, each enriched with sweetened condensed milk and dusted with coconut, any thoughts of diets will likely be relegated to your dreams.
