With abundant FDNY- and NYPD-branded knickknacks and apparel, The Original Fire Store is a haven for tourists, patriots, and kids obsessed with fire trucks. There are puzzles of burning buildings, T-shirts emblazoned with insignia, firefighter action figures, and cop-themed business card holders just for starts. The often kitschy inventory is counterbalanced by some serious fare such as 9/11 documentaries and books on New York’s finest and bravest, though campy touches like fire engine-red carpeting and fireball candies at the register soften the somber gravitas of any Ground Zero merchandise. No longer for sale are those FDNY calendars; evidently there’s a fair share of bad boys among those hunky shirtless do-gooders.
SalesApparel marked down 20% to 30% during annual sale in January.
