A surprisingly ladylike presence on a block otherwise lined with punky vintage stores and cafes, Alice Cheng’s designs are polished without seeming imported from Lilly Pulitzer's turf on the Upper East Side. Details such as piping, gathered necklines, and the occasional polka dots add a bit of downtown drama to the classic-six looks. Since her debut collection in 2004, A. Cheng attire became a regular feature in the pages of Lucky, In Style, Real Simple, and other mass-market magazines, anointing her as a stylish, refined designer that Everywoman could love. Cheng says that a trip to her shop should be like visiting a friend’s closet, and the storefront's simplicity plays to that: one room with racks of clothes, a mirror leaned against the wall, and whatever the sales clerk on duty feels like putting on the stereo. Customers can also pick through a display of jewelry by local designers, all of whom share Cheng’s cheekily altered uptown sensibility.
