Profile
Created by Alice Kriemler Schoch (A-Kri-S) in 1922 and now overseen by her grandson, this tony women's wear line holds tight to tradition and its revered namesake. Housed in a 200-year-old gray-faced rowhouse—the Swiss label's flagship location—the Akris classic collection hangs from headless mannequins perched behind two stories of arched windows, while a minimalist parade of impeccably cut suits, tailored pants and demure blouses punctuate an otherwise spare white interior. Like the boutique's marble accents and signature horsehair walls, the pieces are constructed from equally luxurious fabrics, including fine cashmere, silk and wool. Upon closer inspection, Akris' designs reveal two trademarks: First, a double-faced sewing technique that yields a seam so undetectable you could wear a jacket inside out. Second, the otherwise buttoned-up label sneaks polka dots into every collection; whether large, small, embroidered, or sequined, they're always discreetly hidden in the lining.
