With endless aisles of flamboyant clothing, one-of-a-kind shoes, and eccentric accessories, Allan & Suzi consignment shop feels like the wardrobe room of a quirky variety show. Back when Allan Pollack was a hairdresser in Brooklyn, he compiled an impressive rolodex of high-class season ticket-holders who later became the first to donate their used ball gowns, suits, and worn-once stilettos when this shop opened in 1987. Pollack (one half of the namesake; Suzi is his business partner) will turn down clothing that doesn’t fit with his vision of vintage. Faded, Bruce Springsteen concert T-shirts, Chanel suits from the fifties, and last season’s little black Valentino dress are likely to be packed next to each other on the unapologetically cluttered racks. Even if vintage and four-figure couture aren’t your thing, Allan & Suzi is also good for an authentic-looking Halloween costume: Rhinestone platforms, leopard-print leotards, suede-fringed skirts with feathers, and even the gold Giorgio di Sant'Angelo bodice Goldie Hawn wore on the cover of March, 1992’s Vanity Fair have all been on hand.
