Established in the 1920s, Allen Edmonds is a perennial go-to for refined men’s shoesóBill Clinton is a fan. Fashioned from premium European calfskin, Allen Edmonds shoes forgo the metal sole inserts favored by many men’s dress-shoe manufacturers. The result is loafers and lace-ups that break in much quicker and feel a bit more pliable than typical dress shoes. One line of leather footwear even has the shape and feel of a pair of Converse All-Stars, while still being acceptable for a board meeting. Though most of the shoes are handcrafted by artisanal assembly lines in Wisconsin, each pair in the Seven series (designed to compete with Ferragamo and Santoni) is bench made in Italy by a single workman who stitches and hammers the shoes together from start to finish. The store has its own cobbling service that, for a fee, will re-heel and resole an old pair. To keep them looking like new, customers can pick up a chamois and a tin of polish to match their shoes’ evocatively named Allen Edmonds color, be it bourbon, merlot, or chile.
