Capitalizing on the success of their men’s store, Alter co-owners Tommy Cole and Roy Caires opened this womenswear-focused sister store across the street in August 2008. The weekly changing selection is funky and versatile: tunics with geometric seams from Preloved, vintage-inspired shirtdresses by Holly G., and slouchy jersey tanks from Kill City and Rojas. Cheap Monday jeans provide skinny-denim staples, stacked on a central table beside screen-printed tees by the store’s own in-house line. Back wooden shelves bear affordable accessories, like Matt and Nat Japanese paper clutches, Sam Edelman Oxford-style shoes, and sterling-silver jewelry by Anne Arden McDonald. Totes, slouchy jackets, and shoulder bags cross over into both Alter locations, as does the store’s signature upside-down hanger logo, which Cole and Caires turned into oxidized-silver pendants.
