You wouldn't know it from its ordinary facade or its location, but this Bargain District luggage shop carries a surprisingly upscale stock. Cases from Zero Halliburton and Swiss Army allow for the up-sale from Travel Pro and Samsonite, while the trendy patterns of the Vera Bradley bags look down from wood-lined cubicles upon stacks of nylon duffles. The floor is a sea of suitcases lined up like paparazzi, gawking as you stroll the well-lit, narrow median of blue carpet that takes you through the deep storefront. Following the blue runway to the back of the store brings customers to those ancillary products that every U.S. luggage shop seems to carry; in Altman’s case, the pens, watches, money clips, lighters, and desk clocks are from higher-end makes like Montblanc and Zippo. Although the additions may seem a bit out of place at a luggage shop—this particular assortment would make more sense (and Altman would fit) on Fifth Avenue—the well-dressed, white collared staff know that the needs of their mostly business class clientele go beyond just travel.
