Taking its name a word that means both rain and candy in Japanese, Ame Ame features men’s, women’s and children’s rain gear alongside confectionery delights. Owner Teresa Soroka--who hopes to rid New York of the cheap disposable umbrellas that litter the streets after it rains--offers umbrellas of all shapes, sizes and colors, from brands like Marimekko, Knirps, Tray6 and Fulton, makers of the original bubble umbrella. A small selection of rainproof jackets, bags, hats, and iPad and Kindle pouches is also available, along with rain boots in playful cheetah and floral prints to upscale fur-lined designs from Ilse Jacobsen • Hornbæk, Aigle and Barbour. And for those more concerned with satisfying their sweet tooth, there are glass jars filled with the best-selling chocolate covered gummies, green apple army men and pink gummy pigs from Holland.
