The mannequin in the window of this one-room boutique is changed every week by owner Ann Crabtree herself, presenting an evolving display of the shop’s versatile cashmere knits, wide-leg trousers, and crisp button-downs shirts. Since 1989, the store’s color-sorted collection of daytime apparel from mid-range French and Italian designers has earned it a following of well-heeled Upper East Side regulars, who stock up on conservative basics like thigh-grazing cashmere sweaters, loose-fitting tanks, Etro blazers, and Gunex trousers in basic black, brown, or tan. Crabtree handpicks new seasonal ensembles on biannual trips to Paris, grouping together easily matched separates on orderly racks. She’s also happy to act as a stylist for curious customers, pulling polished outfits, and accessorizing with necklaces made from large metallic beads or earrings of colored glass.
