Serious art collectors—and Upper East Siders with a Cleopatra complex—visit this austere gallery and store for authentic artifacts and jewelry from the ancient Roman and Egyptian eras. Located across from the Whitney Museum, Antiquarium is a mini-museum in its own right, and has in fact lent pieces to the collections of major metropolitan outposts. The small, brightly lit space displays its wares behind locked glass cases—or, in the case of sculptures like the Greco-Roman marble busts, mounted on pedestals around the perimeter of the room. Tiny, intricate artifacts from 3000 B.C. to 1000 A.D. line shelves along the walls, while larger vases and sculptures are displayed in wall cases. In addition, customers find a substantial selection of classic, high-end, exotic jewelry from Egypt. Pieces like early Hellenistic gold rosette earrings and a Sasanian garnet ring would certainly be swank accessories with Lanvin’s famous goddess dress.
