Perhaps his past stint as a nude model partly explains why Apollo Braun's self-titled boutique is a wonderland for the sexually (and stylishly) uninhibited. Born Doron Braunshtein, Braun left his native Israel for New York in 2001, and scrounged together enough funds and friends in fashion to open his Lower East Side shop in 2003. Now celebrities like Bjork and edgy neighborhood passersby clamor for in-your-face "fuckyou.com" tees, "I have sex on the first date!" totes, and "J'adore Porn" wear created by Braun and more than forty other designers. The crowded, colorful space teems with one-of-a-kind patchwork couture: men’s plaid trousers unseamed and sewn upside-down into a vintage denim skirt; a trucker hat layered with strips of neon spandex fabric and cotton pom-poms; a polyester blazer accented with sequined flamingo appliqués and safety pins. Cyndi Lauper-types with a naughty streak will feel right at home in bright sweaters adorned with unclothed Barbies and Kens. And a selection of disc earrings, denim cuff bracelets, and graffiti flats are the perfect accessories for that R-rated Culture Club look.
