Smith Street in Carroll Gardens is the main strip for Loretta Gendville's chain of businesses, including general children’s store Area Kids and Area Emporium and Spa. There’s also Area Play, a small store open since 2006 and packed with toys for newborns through 7-years-olds. Rather than plastic childhood staples like G.I. Joes and Barbies, shoppers will find eco-friendly options here, including Melissa & Doug's pizza-party sets and Plan's elegantly constructed pull toys. For really little ones, there are rattles in the shape of cell phones, as well as doll-adorned teething rings by Germany-based Haba. The shop stocks design-conscious items like Kidrobot's collectible figures and zipper pulls, and contemporary, hand-knit plush toys by Blabla. Locally made items, like sleek wooden cars from Manhattan-based Kid O and Munipals' MTA-licensed wooden subway cars, are also in the mix.
