In October 2005, local artists Kenny Greenberg and Diane Hendry opened this corner shop a few blocks from the 7 train stop in Long Island City as a place for local artists to display and sell their work. Residents of the community hold the shop close to their hearts, donating to the used-book racks, coming in to chat with the volunteer clerks that run the place on weekends, and partying with each other at the gallery’s opening nights, filled with music and food. The offerings range from small, five-by-seven prints and CDs by local bands to original paintings and Greenberg’s neon-light designs (like that of LIC’s iconic SilverCup sign). Also in stock are pottery, jewelry, and pillows by Hendry, tote bags and T-shirts by Ciara Eland, and paintings and greeting cards by Arthur Hammer. Prices vary, but it’s always free to hear the staff share a history of the neighborhood and its art scene.
