Profile

In a neighborhood like Belmont, where at least six decades-old pastry shops still thrive, longevity is usually a direct result of specialization. At this large, clean corner shop, success is due to freshly stuffed cannoli and custom-made cakes (especially ones for weddings). According to legend, family patriarch, Anthony Artuso, Sr., went without a vacation for 17 years in order to ensure that every bride got the perfect cake. A four-door refrigerator case displays Artuso's current works of inspiration: sheet cakes embellished with multi-hued flowers, double-deckers covered with chocolate, and grand tiered wedding cakes, sprinkled with silver and connected to smaller cakes via stairways. Cannoli-lovers devour forearm-sized shells coated in dark chocolate then filled on-the-spot with sweetened ricotta. The clerks, dressed in black "Welcome to the Bronx" T-shirts, also take orders for crunchy biscotti, cookies, fior di mandorla and sfogliatelle.
