Located on the first floor of the Asia Society Museum, AsiaStore carries a wealth of gift items from Japan, China, India, Korea, and Indonesia. Browsers will find blankets and comforters made out of vintage kimonos, silk “cocoon jackets,” hand-painted tea sets, contemporary furniture, and thousands of books on Asian art, culture, and enlightenment. Depending on the museum’s exhibits, the inventory shifts—particularly the impressive selection of semi-precious jewelry surrounding the cash register. These pieces are often the first Stateside exposure for Asian jewelry artists and range from necklaces strung with chunks of jade to gold teardrop earrings to diamond pieces from India. For the young at heart, there are decorative geisha dolls and the new-school version of kokeshi (wooden folk dolls) called momiji, their oh-so-cute hobbies noted on the bottom of their boxes: One doll likes “marmite and Jackie Chan,” another “shopping, fashion, and long division.”Sales
