Profile

Anit Hora and Lori Labedz worked as aestheticians at Soho’s Great Jones Spa for four years before opening this girly apothecary on a quiet residential corner off Atlantic Avenue. As the flagship location for Hora’s apothecary line Mullein & Sparrow, which is heavy on herbal facial masks and scented body oils, the gift shop is also a well-curated destination for other locally sourced holistic beauty products, like hand-blended perfumes from Brooklyn’s MCMC Fragrances and Hi Wildflower Botanica’s garden-aroma candles. The feminine, tin-ceilinged shop spotlights handcrafted indie cosmetics like Meow Meow Tweet organic lavender deodorant and spruce-scented Big Pine Mountain soap, as well as local jewelers—Catbird’s dainty gold rings and Verameat’s more whimsically embellished bands with brass vampire teeth, or a dinosaur eating fried chicken. You’ll find a large selection of the more mainstream Rifle Paper Co.’s floral stationery and wrapping paper, plus higher-end beauty products imported from Europe, like Tocca perfumes, La Florentina soaps, and Proraso men’s shaving creams. The store’s “witchy corner” also offers tarot cards, sage, and incense for a darker twist, including alchemy-inspired oil blends made especially for the store. To help indecisive shoppers, Hora and Labedz craft themed cardboard-box gift sets stuffed with raffia and a small selection of items. The partners select goods from Brooklyn-based artists and independently owned lines throughout the U.S., many of which Hora discovered at local craft fairs or while perusing Instagram and Etsy. A signature bottle of Mullein & Sparrow body oil, gold stud earrings, a Cacao Prieto chocolate bar, and colored pencils stock one typical gift arrangement that’s topped with a silk pink bow.
