Not only has A. W. Kaufman been owned and run by three generations of the same family since its establishment in 1924, but many of its customers come from families that have been Kaufman clients for just as long. This tiny Lower East Side underwear and intimates shop may do only one thing, but it does it like no one else. True, it sells an incredible array of high-end women’s and men’s undergarments and sleepwear, all imported from Europe. But mainly it’s a place women come for ideal-fitting bras. (The staff can select the right piece just by looking at a customer.) There’s no pomp and circumstance; product is not so much displayed as stored, with underwear in organized plastic bins and sleepwear individually wrapped in plastic dry cleaning bags. The family stocks what they love, finds what customers need, and simply will not let clients leave in anything that doesn’t fit like a glove—and a supportive glove at that.
