Unlike the vintage-furniture emporia of the East Village, where seventies glitz-pop reigns supreme, the Danish Modern collection at Dumbo's Baxter & Liebchen relates a warmth that’s almost folksy. Located in a 5,000-square-foot showroom filled with over 1,000 items, the store is the brainchild of Andrew Kevelson, who had acted as an underground designer’s resource before opening his shop circa 2005. While the Danish Modern style had its heyday from the forties through the sixties, its appeal—arising from design elements that seem to float in the backdrop of small-scale apartments—remains very au courant. Pieces by designers like Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen are especially popular and, beyond form and function, have the added draw of being fairly reasonably priced.
