Toni Pinto and family moved a block downtown from their old wholesale butcher shop, Empire Purveyors, and upscaled their family-run food business to include prepared foods and a small, on-site café. Open since 2004, the long-held family values still hold in the new space. "We hand select everything, and get what is best," says Pinto about the small but well-stocked marketplace of meat, poultry, and gourmet food. Beekman nods to both the old and the new, with fresh meats like center-cut pork chops or herbed London-broiled tri-tip, and ready-made repasts, like BLT pasta salad, butternut squash and apple soup, and outstanding homemade Italian meatballs. Three different specialty sandwiches a day tempt lunchtime browsers, with catering and party planning available for patrons who plan ahead. Customers as diverse as U.N. ambassadors and neighborhood celebs value Beekman’s selection of local goods like Amy's breads and Hoboken Eddie's horseradish-and-jalapeño mustard sauce. Cooking essentials, like chicken stock and meat seasoning, and desserts, like Ciao Bella's blackberry cabernet or green tea and white chocolate gelato, are also on hand.
