For husband-and-wife owners John and Karine Bermingham, this refined UES antiques shop is a labor of love. Not long ago, he ran an antique store on Bleecker Street specializing in French Country; she was an antiques dealer in France. Their trade brought them together, and today they cater primarily to an interior designers whose clients can easily afford the $2,000 to $20,000 price tags. The inventory—meticulously spread over two floors and an 800 square-foot terrace—encompasses furniture, lighting, and paintings from the eighteenth to twenty-first centuries. While the collection is heavy in classic French pieces, such as a Louis XVI marble-top commode, it also features more modern items, like an art deco desk chair with velvet upholstery and gilded legs. The store specializes in custom upholstery using old-world techniques and bright, hand woven silk fabrics. Most pieces are acquired through antique trade dealers in France, though some are purchased at auctions within the United States; new shipments arrive weekly.
