Owned by sculptor and jewelry designer Doug Abraham, who also oversees Ralph Lauren's jewelry line, Bess relocated from its former home in Nolita to Lafayette Street in 2006. Inside the boutique lie Bess's not-so-hidden treasures: big, bold, colorful jewelry made of precious and semi-precious stones. Abraham fashions his creations inside the store (which is named after his wife), then passes them on to his local production team. Of the shop's two lines of jewelry, a signature collection of colossal bracelets, necklaces, and rings (which Abraham designs solo) features large and unusually cut raw and polished stones, all set in 18 karat gold. Abraham Dupont, Bess's lower-priced line (crafted by Abraham and designer Lauren duPont) offers necklaces made of rich, layered fabrics like silk and velvet, interwoven with semiprecious stones.
