The wine display in this uncomplicated shop recalls the boy-girl divide at a junior-high dance: Whites line up on one side of the room and reds on the other. The selection is further organized by grape, so a malbec from San Juan may sidle up to one from Cahors, France. Green dots on the shelves indicate organic or biodynamic wines; blue dots signal bottles that are available chilled. Several white signs hang from the exposed-brick walls as they recap the characteristics and challenges of various vitis vinifera, including tempranillo and chenin blanc. (Other than a few wine accessories, these serve as the room’s sole decoration.) The focus on developing regions here also keeps prices practical for everyday buys. For every Napa producer, you might find a few choices from California’s Shenandoah and Santa Ynez valleys. Wines from Portugal’s Douro appellation hang tough next to Rioja picks, while rosés, ports, and sakes stand out like chaperones against the royal-blue back wall.Tastings
