A family-owned fine-plumbing-products retailer, Blackman opened in 1921 in Long Island and now has thirteen showrooms, all in the New York metro area. The one Manhattan location is clean, bright, and the largest designer bath showroom in the city. Nickel, chrome, and stainless steel dominate the selection, and pieces trend toward clean, contemporary lines. No appointment is necessary to visit and meet with a sales rep, who walks customers through displays of matte and glossy tubs, shower systems with built-in hand and body sprays, and deck-mounted hot-air tubs. Blackman sells more than 75 labels, and the Manhattan location has exclusive distribution deals with Kohler, a conservation-minded plumbing line, and sleek German brand Burg. Blackman also does project work for offices and outfitted the Plaza Hotel Residences. Items are shipped from its Long Island warehouse and can sometimes be special-ordered: Decotec Paris can craft its 24-inch vanities in a variety of colors, for instance, and Japanese-inspired Stone Forrest will custom-design granite- and wood-based pieces.
