It's easy to miss this narrow store in the northern reaches of Chinatown, but there’s a trove of inexpensive martial-arts supplies at BLT (letters which stand for the words “good fortune” in Cantonese). In 2006, kung fu enthusiast Jonathan Choy bought the shop with his family and launched a line of BLT kung fu uniforms—westernized versions with pockets and drawstring waists. The staff is fluent in English and can walk the most novice of ninjas through the selection of uniforms, sew-on patches, and footwear, as well as the harrowing range of weapons, including chucks, swords, and fighting sticks. There’s also shelf upon shelf of instructional books and DVDs on all kinds of martial arts, as well as the requisite Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan posters. Once a week Choy teaches an all-ages class in his specialty—black tiger kung fu—in a small studio accessed at the back of the store.
