Thousands of antiquarian and out-of-print cookbooks line the walls of Bonnie Slotnick’s snug, slightly academic shop. The majority are American—like a first edition of The Four Seasons Cookbook or Mary and Vincent Price’s Treasury of Great Recipes—but there’s also a generous selection of European titles and a valuable collection of etiquette and cocktail books. Slotnick also hordes issues of Gourmet magazine dating back to the forties and international periodicals like Vogue Entertaining & Travel and Delicious from Australia, so you’re covered whether you’re looking for recent culinary trends or obsolete recipes of yesteryear. Though the proximity to the James Beard House on 12th Street is convenient, make sure you call to check the hours before you go—they change weekly and tend to be spotty.
NoteThe store is open six days a week from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., though the day it is closed changes weekly.
