After lamenting the closing of some of her favorite Williamsburg gift shops, Basia Grocholski decided to open her own store in 2007, along with husband Douglas Friedmutter. Playing off the neighborhood's strong Polish contingent, the couple christened the space "Brooklynski. A former graphic designer, Grocholski built many of the store's artful displays herself, like a shelf fashioned from a refurbished hutch she found discarded on the streets of Brooklyn. Most of the merchandise is handmade or ecoconscious, like necklaces hung with vintage charms, silk-screened leather belts, and Paddywax candles packed in recycled paper boxes tied with hemp twine. The ever-changing screen-printed canvas tote bags are bestsellers, as are organic cotton T-shirts printed with the store's logo. Grocholski puts some of her own creations in the mix as well, including hand-painted porcelain animals nabbed from flea markets and dishes pieced together from found glassware.
