Bruno Cavalli and family have toiled for over a century to earn the title of ravioli ruler. Their reward: A pasta and gourmet food shop that's expanded to two Manhattan locations, in addition to a wholesale outlet in Hackensack. Naturally, the empire's primary artillery is the fresh ravioli, available in 20 varieties—everything from a simple low-fat pumpkin version to a bursting creation of eggplant, ricotta, basil, sun-dried tomato and pine nuts. All other classic pastas are available, as are the store's own brand of jarred sauces—the spicy puttanesca makes a tongue-singeing topper. Typical offerings of olives, bread and biscotti, as well as a few unusual ingredients, fill the shelves, and the deli section provides a wide array of heros, wraps, salads, coffee and, at some locations, smoothies, as well as the opportunity to sample a few items before taking them home. Custom-made cakes allow shoppers to play king for a day, or at least for a few minutes.Extra
