Since 1904, residents of Carroll Gardens have relied on this family-run establishment for their basic baked-good needs. Faded green curtains frame the sidewalk window, in which fresh loaves are displayed as golden-brown bait to lure passersby. The Caputos are obviously so confident about their century-old recipes, they haven't worried much about how the interior looks: Wood paneling predominates, and the open door into the back baking area doesn’t offer a glamorous view. Fortunately, the creations that emerge require no gussied-up surroundings. While the basic Italian baguette may be best for creating sandwiches, other loaves—stuffed to the crust with olives, fennel, golden raisins, or even prosciutto—can act as meals unto themselves. Trays of cookies, biscotti and bagels are usurped by the glass refrigerator full of pies and cakes which will trigger a flip through the calendar to find an imminent birthday.
