The name is a bit misleading. While it stocks greeting cards for every imaginable social situation, and a fair supply of blank, write-it-yourself missives, the inventory extends far beyond cards. With cards come gifts, and gifts mean parties, making Cardeology a reliable source for the essentials of festive celebrations. Indeed, one of the shop's walls is, uh, papered with enough gift wrap, ribbon and glittery bags to cover the longest Manhattan gift list. Shelves of novelty mugs, coffee table books, and gag gifts make for entertaining perusing. Parents come here to mine the welcome mother-lode of children's birthday party supplies: Cartoon character paper plates, noisemakers and balloons are packaged together for easy shopping and matching. Stuffed animals and baby booties attract the baby shower crowd, while Filofax fillers and Crabtree & Evelyn soaps satisfy adult gift-givers and shoppers. — Jeannette Park
