Profile
This venerable jeweler, first established in France in 1847 and credited with inventing the first wristwatch in 1904, built an international reputation for singular luxury by serving the court of Edward VII and setting (and selling) the legendary blue Hope diamond to an American socialite. Today, le Maison Cartier offers immutable, glittering proof that with enough money one can buy class and good breeding—or at least a very convincing facsimile. Everything on display in the intimate brass and marble-lined Fifth Avenue flagship, from the velvet-supple leather handbags to the signature diamond tennis bracelets and gold cufflinks, drips with a certain, none-too-subtle bygone elegance. In addition to its deservedly famous men's and women's watches, Cartier is also well-known for its elegant engagement rings and wedding bands. No matter what the item, the emphasis here is on classic, conservative refinement—with no room at the showcase for outré, or even mildly daring, designs.
Key Departments
StationeryCartier offers beautiful engraved stationery set in crisp black script on heavy stock. If you need something to write with, Cartier also stocks fine fountain and ballpoint pens.
Wedding RingsThis international jeweler has an ample selection of classic, high-end engagement bands in town. Its signature rose-yellow-and-white-gold Trinity ring, introduced in 1924, would make any lady smile.
Cuff LinksCartier has some of the most sophisticated men’s jewelry in the world. Eighteen-karat-yellow-gold-and-stainless-steel cuff links start at $2,400. The lapis-lazuli-studded bars make a truly stunning gift.
Men's WatchesIn certain rarefied circles, a Cartier watch is as compulsory as an Hermès tie or an Armani suit. Be sure to check out the classic leather-strapped men's tank as well as the sporty Roadster style.
Wedding InvitationsWe love Cartier’s Social Stationery, which harks back to Jazz Age glamour. For weddings, the style is classic, conservative, and very high-end (they solely offer engraving). One hundred custom-engraved invitations, with inner and outer envelopes. Prices upon request.
