This venerable jeweler, first established in France in 1847 and credited with inventing the first wristwatch in 1904, built an international reputation for singular luxury by serving the court of Edward VII and setting (and selling) the legendary blue Hope diamond to an American socialite. Today, le Maison Cartier offers immutable, glittering proof that with enough money one can buy class and good breeding—or at least a very convincing facsimile. Everything on display in the intimate brass and marble-lined Fifth Avenue flagship, from the velvet-supple leather handbags to the signature diamond tennis bracelets and gold cufflinks, drips with a certain, none-too-subtle bygone elegance.
