After cooking for more than a decade in the kitchen of the MetLife Building, Italian immigrant Vincent Cervasio opened this tiny, barebones takeout spot in the south Slope in 1965. Now run by his son Vincent Cervasio Jr., Catene still serves the neighborhood's breakfast and lunch crowd with American and Italian favorites. Large jars of mayo, mustard, peppers, and pickles decorate the walls behind the register where Aunt Marissa Cervasio greets customers in Italian-accented English, and a cadre of kin from different generations can be found at the cold and warm meal stations. From the deli come Boar's Head meats and cheeses and homemade chicken salad. On the hot side, blood-red roast beef shares the table with the family's fist-size meatballs, cheese-topped baked ziti, and thick layers of eggplant parmigiana. Sandwiches come in wrap, roll or—in customary "mangia"-style—on a mutant, forearm-size hero.
