When Christine Ryan’s small screen-printing business took off in the late nineties, customers and buyers began asking her to expand upon her line of T-shirts printed with fifties-style pinup girls. So she designed a feminine line of hourglass-shaped dresses, tailored tops, and boy-short underwear. Now with her own shop, she single-handedly produces an entire line of womenswear, hats, and handbags, all within the confines of her sewing studio in the back of the store. Dresses are mostly brightly colored cotton-polyester blends, hats are colorful winter knits, and bags are simple square shoulder purses or duffels. The only items Ryan doesn’t create herself are the small selection of predominantly vintage women’s pumps and the delicate earrings and necklaces with beads or faux-gemstones. Ryan finds inspiration in fifties styles partly because they lend themselves to curvier figures; though the store carries traditional XS to L sizes, Ryan will customize a piece to fit any woman’s body.
