When the Times Square location of this store opened in 2002, customers got to shop with Snoop, Mobb Deep, and Tiki Barber. Nowadays the occasional rapper or pro athlete may drop in for a promo appearance, but Champs no longer depends on stars to draw crowds hungry for white-on-white Nike Air Force Ones, Derek Jeters in black, and everything in between. Primarily a purveyor of sneakers, the store lines its back-lit walls from floor to ceiling with an impressive selection of the brands you’d expect—New Balance, Nike, Puma, and Adidas—as wells as less commonly seen brands like K-Swiss and Royal Elastics. Converse (plain or patterned) and Timberlands (traditional or black with hot pink detailing) round out the casual footwear offerings. Surrounding the football-shaped check-out station, racks of sports-themed T-shirts, sweatshirts, jerseys, caps, hats, duffel bags, and retro travel bags make for a slightly more extensive selection than Champs’ Harlem and Herald Square locations. The store also stocks rip-away pants, watches, and sunglasses. Overhead monitors and plasma TVs streaming overlapping music videos and live sports feeds give the store a CNN studio feel. While the din and the range of shoe options might overwhelm you, six-foot-tall bobble heads of Alan Iverson, Barber, and Jason Kidd are on hand to nod encouragement and promote sales.
