This inviting shoebox gallery sells more than 150 prints from up-and-coming artists at affordable prices. Founded by the husband-and-wife owners of a small-batch printing boutique in the East Village, the gallery receives more than 40 submissions each month, accepting one or two from each group. All are illustrations, lending cohesiveness to the diverse collection. The prints adorning the walls cover a range of subjects, from whimsical portraits and imagined scenes to New York streets. About 60 percent of the featured artists hail from New York, among them comic book artists, crafters, professional illustrators, and students fresh from college. One pale yellow wall is reserved for original art exhibitions (with items from $80 to $500 apiece), which are held on the first Saturday of every month. Conserving limited wall space, the gallery keeps two oversized binders filled with every available print for easy browsing. After picking out your art, the choices are simple: A single print costs $20; a matted version is $40, and adding a black or brown frame is $80. Every illustration is an open edition, and the owners do all the printing themselves to ensure quality and keep prices low.
