Usually women shop for a handbag to match their outfit, but at Che Che it's the other way around. Hong Kong native and longtime New Yorker Marilyn Cheung Ko owns this clothing and accessory shop, as well as locations in Singapore, Japan, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. Her sister Eliza crafts the signature handbags, which are colorfully overlaid with beading, appliques, cut-outs, and handpainted designs, and big on animal and nature subjects, among them dogs, cats, stars, birds, and fish. Ko's own fashion designs sprang from customers seeking clothing to match the bags they bought at her store, and she favors richly textured fabrics like multi-hued tweeds, brocades, and linens for suits and jackets, and silk and cotton for blouses. She also sells shoes (color-coordinated, of course), and jewelry that changes with the seasons.
