Gathering around the oven with generations of Polish women, Melanie Schrimpe was primed to become a baker from girlhood. After honing her talent for making treats at Baked and Magnolia, she opened Cheeks, which bears her childhood nickname and spotlights her home-style approach. With its cozy white Cape Cod bay window and off-white walls, this petite confectionery (that's right, no bread) specializes in sumptuous dessert cakes which can be bought by the piece or ordered whole in advance: dense almond cake, rich German chocolate, and lesser-known but equally enticing concoctions like coconut lime, and pistachio with lemon-boiled buttercream. Though layer cakes are the specialty, Cheeks also sells pies, quiches, and scones all made from locally produced, hormone-free, organic ingredients. (That said, you can skip the sea-salt-espresso cookies.) Only seasonal fruits from Red Jacket Orchards plump the pies. Schrimpe barks, "when blueberries aren't in season, you just don't eat blueberries."
