Profile

Chip and Pepper Foster's high–end denim line was once carried only by large, impersonal department stores like Bloomingdale's and Barneys. But in their Nolita shop, the identical twin brothers have built a home for their purposefully distressed wares that is very much their own. Unlike the sparse décor of its neighboring boutiques, Chip & Pepper has transformed its small studio space into a Canadian–themed log cabin, complete with an antler chandelier, fly-fishing rods, and a wall-sized image of the Lake of the Woods. In between the black-and-white photos of the entrepreneurs' childhood in the Great White North, patrons sift through endless stacks of the stylishly shredded vintage jeans and cords favored by celebs like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. Paying homage to the important females in the designers' lives, the women's lines include Pamela, after their mother, and The Nik, after Chip's wife. Their menswear titles, on the other hand, sport more mischievous nomenclature: Tube Steak, Big Pickle, etc. In addition to traditional denimwear, the store also offers its University line, a collection of fashionably worn-in tees and hoodies stamped with the vintage logos of 35 colleges.
