When British furniture designer Sweetu Patel married Brooklyn-native Nicole Gonzalez, they turned their Anglo/American union into a furniture and accessories gallery dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging British designers. Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, since 2004, Citizen:Citizen's bright, whitewashed space is tucked behind an anonymous storefront and on a mostly residential block off of Bedford Avenue's main drag. Displaying selections from up to five designers per year, with additions each season, the shop attracts a hyper-modernist, irono-snarky, art-conscious crowd in search of unique, conceptual pieces for their loft or studio. Typical are Patrik Fredrikson's Candle #1, an all-wax creation that is both candle and candlestick, his scrub-brush crucifix, and no fewer than two 18K-gold-plated coke spoons. There are also heftier pieces like Alexander Taylor's August sofa, or Philip Wood's large scale photography prints. To further the exchange, the Patels have plans for a London branch of Citizen—this time showcasing American designers.
