Profile
Even if you're the type of person who prefers Lacoste to La Traviata and Diesel to Die Zauberflöte, you can still support the New York City Opera by shopping in this thrift shop, where proceeds go to the venerable Lincoln Center company. Not surprisingly, the formal stock consists mostly of pieces you'd wear to a night out at the New York State Theater: blazers, ties, slacks, and dresses that are worn but still wearable. The heavily marked-down fur coats are in especially good condition, and the designer shoes that start at $25 can be a steal. The merchandise is less impressive upstairs, though, where half-empty shelves carrying glassware and a small selection of novels, art books, and random non-fiction take up much of the space. But a little digging might just turn up something worthwhile, like that framed show poster standing next to a row of threadbare couches.
