A favorite of interior designers and, reportedly, Martha Stewart and Ralph Lauren, this store has been creating custom-designed, hand-built sofas, chairs, and ottomans for more than 25 years. If wandering through the maze of floor models in the calm, cavernous Flatiron showroom doesn’t inspire you, try leafing through the hundreds of upholstery catalogs in the back. Or you can simply bring in a photo of something you like and let the staff take it from there. A small upholstered armchair runs about $2,200 (plus fabric costs), while a rolled-arm sofa starts at $4,600. Salespeople walk customers through the process of choosing their furniture’s size, shape, cushions, trim, skirt, and upholstery, then hand off the specs to the in-house craftsmen.
