Profile

This tech-savvy wine bar and shop offers automated two-ounce tastes of over 100 vintages of wine, triggered with the swipe of a pre-paid card. Bottles are kept temperature-controlled and oxygen-free by the Enomatic preservation system,  a dark wood case that encircles the intimate space with views of Columbus Circle below. Clo’s two master sommeliers make the selections, which span 15 countries; varietals are organized on an increasing scale of body and flavor—from high-acid Riesling to full-bodied Syrah. The petit pours range from $3 to $83, and the white central bar also doubles as an iPod-like touch-screen for scrolling by grape, region, price, or tasting notes. Glassware and gadgetry are displayed in glowing shelves surrounding the outside of the space, including shapely glasses of all sizes, carafes, decanters, wine buckets, vino thermometers, corkscrews, and sheepskin bottle insulators. The bar serves a limited menu of cheese and charcuterie, welcome sustenance for tipplers and those waiting for a table at Bar Masa next door.

Disappointing execution

The concept is great, but the overall execution is poor. First of all, I will commend the service. The host was friendly and attentive. However, the rest of the evening was underwhelming. There is a wide selection of wines, but not as many as I would have expected. It will disappoint anyone who already has narrowed their preference, e.g., Cab Franc in US (not too many options) ... or Sauv Blanc from NZ. The pours should be half as small and half as expensive. The pours are too large to try a wide selection, and with typical cost of $12-$20, tough on the pocket book if you really do want to taste a selection. Additionally, the space is very cramped and difficult to sit comfortably given the people at the table and the walk area. Filled with tourists, so don't expect this to be a local hangout.
