Profile

Plenty of East Village health food stores offer organic produce, dried herbs and essential oils, but most don't have the broad selection of staples that makes for one-stop shopping. This all-natural market stocks a smattering of all of the above, as well as most of the weekly shopping list basics. A fairly large selection of organic, freshly-spritzed vegetables and unbruised fruit is up at the front, with several choices of lettuces, leafy greens, apples, onions and potatoes. Two rows of display racks stretch to the back of the narrow store and are piled high with cereals, sauces, teas, and packaged food, mostly from familiar brands—Newman Organics, Kashi, Health Valley—and bulk dry goods are stored in a wall of dispensers holding at least twenty kinds of grains and rice, granolas, dried fruits, and even organic cat chow. Fresh foods include organic meats, free-range eggs, cheese, and tofu, as well as dairy-free, vegan and macrobiotic goods. Chatty twentysomething staffers are happy to find or explain store products, or serve you organic coffee and juice.

Extra

Along with food, the store stocks a good range of vitamins, supplements, cosmetics, toiletries and house cleaning products.

the place wasn't designed to function with more than 3 customers at a time. the aisles barely fit one person and god forbid you're holding a basket the other person has to walk to the other side of the store to get around you. the products are good and it's reasonably priced but it's such a drag to shop there.

The best natural food store

I've shopped at Commodities Natural Market for years; their staff, everyone from the Vitamin manager to the Produce and Grocery managers are extremely knowledgeable and professional. If they are not sure of a question I've asked, they will research it and find the answer. Each time I go there, they have new items to try. For example, their Cheeses are amazing, they carry only the finest quality of ORGANIC cheeses. The store recently renovated the Health and Beauty Department. They carry wonderful face creams, beauty supplies and an amazing selection of vitamin and herbal products. If you want or need a product they don't have, they are happy to order it for you and the best part is that you don't have to wait a long time to get it. Their produce selection is extensive, all of their produce is fresh and ORGANIC, I never have to worry about getting anything at Commodities that is not ORGANIC, and that is EXTREMELY important to me. I've been coming from Queens to shop at COMMODITIES for years and will continue to do so. In my opinion, COMMODITIES is a GIFT to New York.
