Profile

Though this wine shop’s initial buzz in 2005 undoubtedly had something to do with one of its three founders being elite restaurateur Drew Nieporent (Nobu, Montrachet, Tribeca Grill), the store’s lasting appeal can be attributed to a uniquely straightforward design that makes its refined selection of lesser known producers easy to navigate: Every label is visible as each bottle is displayed horizontally via metal prongs. The arrangement would put a crick in your neck, if it weren’t for the accompanying description tickets dangling upright. (Notes can be taken home if you want to study the stats of your new purchase or contemplate buying an unfamiliar vintage.) Better yet, frequent tastings focusing on regions allow shoppers to sample complex flavors, not just read about them.

Delivery

Free to all five boroughs: Two-bottle minimum 47th St. to 79th St., East River to Fifth Ave.; minimums vary elsewhere.

If you are a wine lover you must visit Crush on 57th and Lexington. It is the most aesthetically pleasing wine store I have ever been in. The wavy, backlit wall of wine and the gorgeous tasting room made to look like a giant wine barrel. It is just a very cool design. I was greeted immediately by the staff and given some great recommendations. The vibe is very laid back and not snotty at all. Don't miss the temperature controlled glass room at the back of the store where all of the high end, old and rare wines are stored. That said, I picked up a few $10 gems that were more of a fit to my budget. Overall a great experience and highly recommended.

Crush is a stylish wine store, but it's the great service and good wine that keep me coming back. I found some delicious Champagnes and some off-beat Austrian varietals that were a hit with my friends at a recent dinner party. They also carry some interesting sakes and some small-batch spirits that I plan to try soon. Definitely worth a visit.
