Tucked inside the six-story housewares mecca ABC Carpet & Home, this independently owned gift-and-paper shop displays a small, carefully curated assortment of rich stationery, delicate engraved jewelry, and colorful glassware from mainly West Coast and European designers. San Francisco transplants Michael Schultz and Douglas Duncan were stationery specialists long before they opened Cursive in 2005, having supplied choice paper goods to ABC for more than a decade through their wholesale business, Motel Deluxe. Like their artistic wares, the space conveys the pair’s appreciation for color and texture, with walls draped in gauzy green and gold fabric and New Age chandeliers crafted from Venetian glass overhead. Les Papiers Jean Rouget’s heavy stock stationery is a best seller, as are vibrant floral letterpressed cards from Herman Yu, Soolip, and Pancake & Frank. Those hunting for gifts are steered toward Jeanine Payer’s poetry-etched jewelry and tables of leather-bound notebooks, topped off with eieio’s vivid gift wrap.
