From its humble origin as Daffy Dan’s Bargain Town in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Daffy’s has developed into a regional chain for discounted designer clothes. An appreciation for the thrill of the hunt—and a healthy respect for the luck of the draw—are necessary companions here. Shoppers willing to brave the thickets of densely-packed racks will find quantities and selection vary considerably from store to store and week to week. One thing’s for sure: Coveted couture straight from the runway never lingers long and that Missoni dress at one-fifth its original price disappeared minutes after it arrived. You’re likely better off with more basic needs: Men’s and women’s suits, basic underwear and socks, even linens, kitchenware, and kids’ clothes can be had here at a good price. — Jed Egan
