DJs spinning at stores is nothing new, although in most cases, patrons are too busy zipping into jeans to pay the music any mind. But at this East Village record shop, which specializes in “music you can shake your butt to,” the DJ counts, and people pay attention to what’s on the turntables. Stocking both vinyl and CDs, Dance Tracks features mostly new albums with some reissues. All kinds of dance music are represented, from funk, soul, and R&B to house, techno, and nu jazz. Because customers are encouraged to preview before they buy, a CD-listening station affords the opportunity to check out every disc in stock; turntables in the back allow you to sample vinyl, too. New stuff—about 30 to 40 titles a week—gives regulars ample chance to shake their groove thangs. — Andrew Sessa
