Profile
It’s no surprise that owner Ann French Emonts used to be a Broadway costume designer. Take, for example, her first window display: a red halter-style silk chiffon dress with a fan strategically placed to produce the full Marilyn effect. It literally stopped traffic, and Emonts hasn’t been able to keep the dress in stock. Her small dress shop mixes clothing she designs and makes herself with a selection of outside dresses, vintage coats, and lingerie by Mary Green (the mesh-with-lace boy shorts are very popular).
Darling is a wonderful resource for feminine, romantic dresses- both new and vintage. Items are reasonably priced for a West Village boutique, and they have a cute selection of undergarments. I visit storeadore.com to receive a 20% Darling discount.
One of my friends had raved about this place, so we went looking for a dress for another friend's wedding. There were some really cute dresses, and I bought one for $110. Later that same day we ended up in a cheapo store in the Manhattan Mall (looking for accessories), and I found the EXACT same dress (same tag and everything) for $30!!! At first I figured, "oh, I bet when the nice people at darling bought this, they didn't know how cheap it really was," but then when I went to return it, I told the salesperson what happened, and her response was ridiculous. She just smiled and said "Wow. You got a really good deal." Now I just can't trust that any of their dresses are truly worth what their pricetags say. Sorry.
