What do a towering 1960s surgical lamp, a carved wooden 18th-century Moroccan table and a humongous stuffed elk head have in common? Location, location, location, as they saying goes—all of these and far more are found at Darr, a most unusual vintage furnishings store that takes "eclectic" to beautiful new extremes. Co-owners Hicham Benmira—a Casablanca-born former Takashimaya personal shopper turned interior designer and shopkeeper—and former video editor Brian Cousins excel at the art of the mix; they cull objects industrial and romantic, rustic and sophisticated, ancient and modern, yet everything inexplicably fits together. There's plenty of mounted vintage taxidermy, from a tiny baby ostrich to a hulking black bear, as well as a wealth of factory shelving, bottle-drying racks, rough-hewn chests and linen grain-sacks that have had their decorative potential unmasked. Darr (which means "home" in Arabic) also provides short-term rental service for everything in the store.
ExtraCo-owners Benmira and Cousins will keep an eye out for special requests on their frequent buying ventures and world travels.
