Profile

In the post-dot-com-bust world of 2003, Kai Yang was a computer programmer without a job. So, on a gut feeling, he opened a women’s fashion store in Flushing. He quickly realized just how little he knew about women’s fashion, but a steady learning curve helped make Dejavu Fashion a success, and in 2008, Yang opened this East Village outpost. The white-walled, white-floored narrow store utilizes pieces of black iron-spiked fence to hang clothing, with bits of backlit white fabric separating racks. Like the décor, the clothing doesn’t deviate much from the black-white spectrum, although the odd mustard-colored wool coat can be found. Blue jeans with extravagantly stitched pockets for strikingly low prices dominate one section of wall, and the rest of the stock consists mostly of frilly tops or skirts from French brand Cop.Copine or Italian brand Rinascimento, along with some of Yang’s own designs. The back of the store features an exceptionally inexpensive two-day tailoring service, the main attraction of which is advertised on the two white pillows set on the black couch: “Save.”
